LAB-PHONE PROJECT

Spectrometry optics and technology monitoring system (OST-SMART) for management and control of grape and blueberry production and quality to face the effects of climate change.

This initiative is developed from the need of having lab results in a faster, more timely manner, for decision-making, since an analysis process at a private lab can take from 1 to 15 days to deliver results, depending on the type of analysis.

The goal of this project is to develop a monitoring system (OST-SMART) to improve agronomic management (production and quality), via the interaction between two key factors: spectrometry optics, which is an analysis method used to determine the existing relationship between a compound’s light absorption and its concentration.

To this date, two wine grape and blueberry harvest seasons have passed, from where a large amount of data has been collected to evaluate different organoleptic quality parameters (brix, anthocyanins, polyphenols, ripeness index, firmness, and titratable acidity) and carbon nitrogen analysis in pruning for both crops.

The expected result is to have a nanosensor that allows to study following parameters: brix, anthocyanins, polyphenols, ripeness index, firmness, titratable acidity, and carbon nitrogen ratio in less than 1 hour (ideally in real time), which will be sent via smartphone, which will deliver the quantified values once processed with the corresponding algorithms for each parameter.
